2012 Ford Focus U.S.-Spec ? First Drive Review

Ford has cracked the code on the C-segment and returned the Focus?s honor.
Ford was keen that we drive a preproduction 2012 Focus out of the public eye. That?s how we wound up near Potrero, California, separated from the Mexican border by nothing but a rocky brown hill. Well, that?s not exactly true. [...]

Chocolate Smart ForTwo by Q-Pot

Chocolate Smart ForTwo by Q-Pot – Click above to watch the video after the jump

In Japan, Christmas Eve is a romantic holiday during which couples eat special cakes. So what’s Valentine’s Day, then? An occasion for women to buy men chocolate, of course. Or chocolate cars, as the case may be.

Okay, so the Smart ForTwo you see above isn’t actually made of chocolate, it just looks that way. Specially prepared for the holiday by designer Tadaaki Wakamutsu of Japanese luxury jeweler/chocolatier Q-Pot, the unique Smart city car features a special chocolate-themed paint scheme. It’s priced at 2.36 million yen (equivalent to about $28k), which places it at a considerable premium over the standard Smart ForTwo’s 1.84 million yen MSRP ($22k) in Japan. Follow the jump to watch the video report, or head over to the Q-Pot website for a closer look.

Nationwide Champ Brad Keselowski ‘Will Live With’ NASCAR’s New Format

Posted on Jan 30, 2011

TAMPA, Fla. — Brad Keselowski arrived at Tampa’s Busch Gardens theme park Wednesday to help promote the Feb. 20 Daytona 500 wearing a black jacket emblazoned with a NASCAR Nationwide series logo — a proud nod to the series championship he won in 2010 but won’t be defending in 2011.

In a posting on its official Twitter account earlier this week, NASCAR announced that drivers must declare themselves eligible for only one championship among its three national series, Sprint Cup, Nationwide and the Camping World Truck series.

That means Keselowski, who drives the No. 2 Miller Lite Dodge for Penske Racing in the marquee Sprint Cup series, will race in multiple series but won’t be able to simultaneously accumulate championship points in Cup and Nationwide as he did this season.

And while NASCAR isn’t formally commenting on or confirming the format change yet — President Mike Helton and Vice President for Competition Robin Pemberton will address it in a scheduled news conference next Friday in Daytona Beach — Keselowski appeared resigned to his fate.

“There’s a lot of different ways of looking at it,” Keselowski said Tuesday. “Obviously NASCAR has an obligation of trying to do the best for the sport and everything and I respect and appreciate that.

“I still plan on competing even though I can’t compete for the championship. I still plan on living up to the commitments that we’ve made for our sponsors and for our team. I’ve had the luxury of competing in both series last year and enjoyed it. We’ll just kinda live with it and deal with it this year.”

Star-Studded Lineup For Rolex 24 at Daytona; Porsche Leads the Way

Posted on Jan 30, 2011

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. — The reigning NASCAR and IZOD IndyCar Series champions highlight a star-studded field for the Rolex 24 at Daytona, the Grand-Am Series’ season-opener at Daytona International Speedway this weekend.

But it’s one of sports car’s more traditional names, Porsche, that both five-time NASCAR champ Jimmie Johnson and two-time IndyCar champ Dario Franchitti will be chasing when the green flag drops at 3:30 p.m. (ET) Saturday.

German Jorg Bergmeister will start the No. 45 Flying Lizard Motorsports Porsche from the pole Saturday in the twice-around-the clock event that has again attracted a Who’s Who list of auto racing greats.

Three Indy 500 winners, defending Daytona 500 winner Jamie McMurray (above left) and a potent mix of current and former NASCAR, IndyCar and Formula One drivers are giving it a go against the best sports car drivers in the world on the 3.56-mile Daytona road course.

Johnson and McMurray are trying to join Mario Andretti and A.J. Foyt as the only drivers to win a Daytona 500 and Rolex 24 crown. Johnson will co-drive with former series champs Alex Gurney and Jon Fogarty in the No. 99 GAINSCO Chevrolet and will start 10th in the marquee Daytona Prototype class. They were fastest in Friday’s final practice.

McMurray is part of an two-car wonder lineup for three-time Rolex winner Chip Ganassi Racing. He’ll co-drive the No. 02 BMW with three IndyCar Series champs, Scott Dixon, Franchitti and open-wheel-to-NASCAR convert Juan Pablo Montoya (above, center, chatting with Memo Rojas). They will start fifth among the 18 prototypes .

The other Ganassi car features defending Grand-Am Series champs Scott Pruett and Memo Rojas along with Ganassi’s newest IndyCar driver Graham Rahal and sports car veteran Joey Hand. It will roll off third.

‘The point of no confidence is quite near’

The wreckage of Jochen Rindt’s car at Barcelona © Getty Images

An excellent insight into the world of F1 as it used to be can be found on the regularly-interesting Letters of Note website. It publishes a hitherto unseen letter from Jochen Rindt to Lotus boss Colin Chapman written shortly after Rindt?s crash at Barcelona which was a result of the wing system on Lotus 49 collapsing at speed.

?Colin. I have been racing F1 for 5 years and I have made one mistake (I rammed Chris Amon in Clermont Ferrand) and I had one accident in Zandvoort due to gear selection failure otherwise I managed to stay out of trouble. This situation changed rapidly since I joined your team. ?Honestly your cars are so quick that we would still be competitive with a few extra pounds used to make the weakest parts stronger, on top of that I think you ought to spend some time checking what your different employes are doing, I sure the wishbones on the F2 car would have looked different. Please give my suggestions some thought, I can only drive a car in which I have some confidence, and I feel the point of no confidence is quite near.?

A little more than a year later Rindt’s Lotus suffered mechanical breakdown just before braking into one of the corners. He swerved violently to the left and crashed into a poorly-installed barrier, killing him instantly.

Di Resta and Hulkenberg fight for Force India seat

Posted on Jan 28, 2011

As the winter nights have shortened so too have the prospects of finding a Formula 1 drive for two of the sport’s brightest prospects.

Nico Hulkenberg – rated as the best rookie of 2010 – and Paul di Resta - Britain’s third driver in Formula 1 alongside Lewis Hamilton and Jenson Button – find themselves fighting for a drive.

At the end of the season, Williams released Hulkenberg in favour of cash-rich GP2 champion Pastor Maldonado.

Hulkenberg’s sudden unemployment has complicated matters for Di Resta as the German is now closing in on the Force India seat the Scot has been warming all season as the team’s reserve.

To add to the dilemma, Force India’s incumbent drivers, Adrian Sutil and Vitantonio Luizzi, still have ties to the team with Italian Liuzzi contracted for 2011 and German Sutil sitting on a one-year option to continue.

Formula 1 insiders believe the hearts and minds of Force India are with Di Resta and the team want to give him one of the two seats that are listed as ‘TBA’ on the official entry list.

After joining the Silverstone-based team as a reserve for 2010, the Scot drove capably in eight first practice sessions on grand prix weekends.

The auburn-haired Di Resta, a laidback and likeable addition to the paddock, quietly impressed the team with his technical feedback and commitment.

At the same time, the 24-year-old proved he was a winner by clinching the German Touring Car championship (DTM) for Mercedes on his weekends away from F1.

His manager Anthony Hamilton – father of McLaren driver Lewis - says: “There hasn’t been one bit of negative information from the team about Paul.

“He has done a great job, the team love him. He’s a champion and a leader. Nothing has changed; he is still a contender for a race seat. We are very positive.”

Hulkenberg, however, is also an intriguing prospect for any F1 team.

The 23-year-old stole the headlines in the midst of the dramatic championship battle by snatching a blistering pole at the Brazilian Grand Prix.

Yes, Hulkenberg had benefited from some tactical groundwork by team-mate Rubens Barrichello on his previous qualifying lap but the German’s feat was still far beyond that of any of the other four F1 newcomers.

Humorous and straight-talking, Hulkenberg came into F1 on the back of a glittering junior career – where he won titles in karting, Formula BMW, Formula Three and the 2009 GP2 Series – and is now a highly-rated F1 prospect

Both Hulkenberg and Di Resta are gifted drivers – but in F1 money often talks louder than talent.

Despite being impressed by Hulkenberg’s “exceptional” skills, Sir Frank Williams let him go in favour of Maldonado simply because he could bring in a reputed 10m euros – largely from Venezuela’s state oil company – at a time when the Williams team had lost several key business partners.

When it comes to securing their own future, the problem for both Hulkenberg and Di Resta is that they don’t bring any cash to the table.

In order to see this content you need to have both Javascript enabled and Flash installed. Visit BBC Webwise for full instructions. If you’re reading via RSS, you’ll need to visit the blog to access this content.

Hulkenberg himself says: “It has become much, much harder to open doors if your application does not come with a serious sponsor package and you really only rely on your talent as the sole ‘sales argument’.”

The complex situation at Force India means the team need to find the cash to buy Liuzzi out of his existing contract – so contributions from a replacement would be welcome.

And of all those in the frame only Sutil, who is understood to have bought around 2m euros to the team in 2010, has the immediate funds to strike that deal.

Force India’s engine partner Mercedes-Benz could also influence the team’s decision.

What if its own-brand Mercedes Grand Prix team wanted to scout out potential replacements for Michael Schumacher or Nico Rosberg by paying to place a driver in another team?

Di Resta is already well-connected and well-liked by Mercedes, especially after his DTM win, but Hulkenberg, as a rising German star, could be a perfect future fit for the Silver Arrows.

For now, Di Resta and Hulkenberg are playing the waiting game.

Hulkenberg’s management company, whose founder Willi Weber also plotted Schumacher’s career, opened talks at the final race in Abu Dhabi and said they had expected Force India to have made their decision by now.

Di Resta is sitting down with the team this week to discuss his future role.

Although nine cockpits are still to be filled on the 2011 grid, options elsewhere remain squeezed.

Hulkenberg’s team have already approached Toro Rosso and Renault but found no room at the inn.

Toro Rosso will stick with Jaime Alguersuari and Sebastien Buemi, with newly-signed third driver Daniel Ricciardo waiting in the wings. The renamed Lotus Renault team are widely expected to retain Russian rookie Vitaly Petrov alongside star driver Robert Kubica.

Timo Glock has confirmed he is staying at Marussia Virgin, with Brazilian Lucas di Grassi and Belgian Jerome D’Ambrosio – both of whom come with sponsorship – the favourites to join him. Back-of-the-grid Hispania first need to find someone to build their 2011 car before confirming drivers.

Di Resta already has a contract to continue as Force India’s third driver in 2011, while Hulkenberg has been linked to the same role at Mercedes and Ferrari.

In the fickle world of Formula 1, it is never a bad idea to have a Plan B.

Sondergard Car Kit by Jesper Hermann

Posted on Jan 27, 2011

The Pontiac Solstice, together with its brethren, have long flown into the direction of the sunset after General Motors officially dissolved the brand last year. But even if production of the Solstice and all other Pontiac models have already ceased, it doesn?t mean that you can?t turn the little Pontiac sports car into something completely different.

For that to happen, we may need to start familiarizing ourselves with kit cars. If you haven?t been introduced to that concept, kit cars are basically cars that are purchased and assembled separately. More often than not, cars used for this purpose are those that have already been discontinued ? the Solstice qualifies on that regard ? and taking the shape and chassis of the kit car while using the same base plate, suspension, engine, and gearbox of the car that was used.

On that note, a Danish company called Sondergard Automotive specializes in producing kit car models and one of their projects is this Pontiac Solstice-based Sondergard kit car concept. Designed by Jesper Hermann of BMW fame, this roadster kit car takes the look of a futuristic sports car that?s been given a vintage feel. Performance specs of the car include a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that produces 265 horsepower and a 0-60 mph time of four seconds.

If you wish to avail of this kit car and turn your Solstice ? or Opel GT in Europe ? into this new-age ?blast-from-the-past? roadster, you?re going to need to shell out somewhere between $52,000 to $89,000.

We actually don?t know if this Sondergard kit justifies the expensive price tag, but if money isn?t an issue for you, then you might as well take the adventurous route and turn your Solstice into this eye-catching roadster.
