Spy Shots: Next-gen Lotus Exige comes into focus

Posted on Aug 31, 2011

Lotus Exige Spy Photo

It looks like the next-generation Lotus Exige will borrow a few styling elements from the Evora. Our army of spy photographers managed to snap a closer look at the upcoming Exige successor, and the car boasts a low, wide nose borrowed from its V6 sister. In addition, the canyon-carver wears a longer roof line and extended rear that may house the same 280 horsepower six-pot found in the grand tourer, though a 350 horsepower supercharged S variant may be in the works as well. Larger brakes are clearly visible through the spoke wheels and that massive spoiler likely helps generate some much-needed downforce at speed.

When can we expect to lay eyes on a non-camouflaged version of the Exige? Hard telling, but our guess is that it won’t be long before dealers start filling out order forms.

Report: Cadillac likely to approve flagship, more hybrid models

Posted on Aug 30, 2011

Cadillac Ciel Concept

According to The Detroit Bureau, Cadillac is aiming to produce a new high-end flagship on the massive Omega platform. The news comes in the wake of the exuberant public reaction to the company’s Ciel Concept, and General Motors says that a hard-top version of the lengthy convertible is already in the works. We may see that concept in as little as a few months. While General Motors is being fairly tight-lipped about the vehicle’s actual production schedule, The Detroit Bureau reports that the new Omega may land in dealerships by 2015 at the latest.

But that’s not the only news from Cadillac. The company has also made it clear that buyers can expect to be able to snap up a range of hybrid vehicles from the luxury automaker. While that includes efforts like the upcoming Volt-based ELR, the brand intends to flex its tech muscles with multiple hybrid technologies in the near future. The Detroit Bureau hypothesizes that Cadillac may dabble in incredibly efficient vehicles as well as high-performance hybrids similar to what Porsche is currently producing.

Journalists shocked at Korea award

Two leading Formula One journalists have expressed their surprise at Korea being named the best grand prix promoter of the season at the FIA?s annual prize gala in Monaco last Friday. The Korean Grand Prix received the Race Promoters’ Trophy despite the event taking place at an incomplete facility with few race fans in attendance and team members and media staying at disparagingly dubbed ‘love hotels’. “Korea. Korea? KOREA??!! I must have been somewhere else,” said Times correspondent Kevin Eason on Twitter. Daily Mirror journalist Byron Young added, “The Korean GP, complete with event and flight chaos, shoddy hotels and things I won’t mention, won the race promotors? trophy. Why?”

Webber ?in the hunt? from third

Posted on Aug 29, 2011

Mark Webber is confident he will be in the hunt for victory in the Belgian Grand Prix despite not converting his practice pace into a pole position. The Australian had been quickest in two out of the three practice sessions at Spa, although all three had been rain-affected to some extent, but ended up third after qualifying. Webber felt he had been too aggressive at the end of the session, which took place in drying conditions.

Five ways to improve F1

Posted on Aug 28, 2011

Emerson Fittipaldi in his heyday © Sutton Images

In an interview in the Times, former world champion Emerson Fittipaldi?s outlined his five-point plan to enhance Formula One. Cut costs ?They spend a fortune in wind-tunnel testing alone. Reduce costs and the slowest teams would catch up and make it more even.? Limit downforce ?They need to reduce enormously the downforce in the cars, the only way to bring back overtaking. We need more mechanical grip so that you have longer braking areas, can set up the car coming out of a corner, get in the slipstream and then overtake.? Close the pitlane ?When the safety car goes out they should close the pitlane. Now it?s just a lottery.? Lift ban on team orders ?It is a very stupid rule. It?s why they are called teams, it?s why they have two cars. If a driver is leading in the championship, everything has to go in his favour. What is wrong with that? It?s so easy for teams to camouflage their orders anyway. All they need to do is tell one guy on the radio he has a problem with his brakes. They can bend the rules very easily. In the old days they would even swap cars, so why do we have this ban now?? Retain traditional grands prix ?These places are the soul of racing. The Americas are under-represented. We have Canada back, but there is no USA, no Argentina, no Mexico. We need to stay in the heartlands.?

egarage 1950 mercury coupe

eGarage has been teasing us for a while now. We’ve seen some interesting videos so far, but the website itself had remained light on content. No longer. eGarage is up and running, and the videos are good.

One we like in particular follows the build process of a custom 1950 Mercury coupe. The chopped and slammed project is the work of Zane Cullen and his Cotati Speed Shop, located in Santa Rosa, California. Cullen and his team have already put two years of work into this custom cruiser, and it looks like they might have another year ahead of them. Still, if this partly finished Merc looks this good now, we can’t wait to see the final product.

Head over to eGarage.com to check out the video showing the progress made so far.
