Power pips Franchitti in first practice

Posted on Apr 30, 2012

Will Power snatched the fastest time away from Dario Franchitti in the closing seconds of the IndyCar Series’ opening practice session in Sao Paulo. In mostly dry conditions in Brazil, Ganassi driver Franchitti looked like he had done enough to end the morning on top with a 1m22.3953s lap.

Report: 40% of McLaren MP4-12Cs bound for the U.S.

Posted on Apr 30, 2012

McLaren dealership

Niche automakers face a difficult decision: lay out the mountain of cash it takes to have their exotic rides certified for American roads, or save the money and miss out on one of the largest markets. McLaren Automotive had the new MP4-12C homologated for the United States, and now they’re thankful that they did.

According to Motor Trend, a whopping 40 percent of the 1000 orders for the MP4-12C that McLaren has taken so far have been placed by customers in the US, through its extensive dealer network here.

It was a surprise most of all for Antony Sheriff, the American who serves as McLaren Automotive’s managing director. From his experiences as a racing fan on this side of the Atlantic, he felt that McLaren lacked the brand recognition that names like Ferrari and Lamborghini enjoy in a market that’s had an on-again, off-again relationship with Formula One.

With the MP4-12C already off to an auspicious start, the focus at McLaren’s high-tech facility in Woking, England, has turned to expanding the lineup. The successor to the legendary McLaren F1 is in the works, and the rumormill suggests that both a convertible version of the MP4-12C and a stripped-down, hardcore variant in the mold of the Ferrari 430 Scuderia and Porsche 911 GT3 RS are also being developed. As for those shooting-brake rumors, we haven’t been holding our breath, and wouldn’t suggest you do, either.

1957 Chevy ‘Tribute Car’ – Engine Detailing

Posted on Apr 28, 2012

Many moons ago when I was a youngster in jr. high, a couple of older guys about 25, sorta took me under their wing and mentored me through my high school years.

I was raised in SoCal, and they took me to all the local car shows and some in L.A. and all the drags, Orange County, lions, Irwindale, you name it, we went there, and they always paid my way. Wouldn't let me pay for food or help with their gas or anything.

Wayne Alexander and John McKnown. My dad and I didn't get along much, and the guys kept me busy and gone!! Wayne drove a brand new beautiful '57 Chevy all shiney and with a "rumpy" engine and four speed.

He taught me to drive in that car and shift a four speed. Once I got my license, he let me drive it by myself quite often – He trusted me, and for a young guy with older men, that was huge.

They accepted me as one of them and never once looked down on me or criticized me. They always encouraged me, and spoke well of me to my parents.

It wasn't until many decades later in my life that I realized what they did for me and how grateful I feel now about how these two average, everyday mailmen, could take a skrawny nobody kid and change his whole life by caring unselfishly. This model is for them, with all my thanks.

The car is done with opening doors and so forth, and ready for paint. The interior will be the focal point, as there will be a huge contrast in color like the real car. This is one of those side projecs, so I won't bore you with the build, I was just proud of the way the seats turned out and wanted to share them. I won't bore you with the whole build.

Thanks for being patient with me Thumbs Up.

Report: Scion targeting 20,000 annual FR-S sales

Posted on Apr 27, 2012

2013 Scion FR-S

Scion has high sales hopes for its new rear-wheel-drive FR-S sports car. According to Ward’s Auto, Jack Hollis, Scion’s vice president, said that he anticipates sales as high as 20,000 units each year. “We’re confident we can sell every one we get our hands on,” Hollis stated.

The FR-S is slated to hit dealerships at the beginning of June and Scion projects that it will sell around 10,000 units before the end of the year, with an additional 20,000 cars finding homes in 2013. The automaker already has 1,243 pre-sale orders for the FR-S.

The nearly identical Subaru BRZ will also be sold in the United States, but parent Fuji Heavy Industries has less ambitious sales hopes. Subaru is only looking to move between 5,000 and 7,000 units annually. Hollis believes the FR-S, which is priced at $24,200 (not including $730 for destination) will sell in higher numbers largely in part to Scion’s larger network of dealers.

Translogic drives the Lamborghini Gallardo

So, we think the crew at our sister site Translogic have lost their minds. Either that or they’re trying to steal our jobs.

While nominally a show and blog about mobility, most weeks Translogic is discovering all manner of geeky automotive technology, while driving alternative-fuel vehicles powered by electricity, the sun, wood, or whatever crap they can find. This week, however, for the 100th show, they straight-up went to the track to drive supercars. At Disney World. Speedway.

Take that, greenies and transportation wonks. Everyone loves to flog roadgoing sex from Lamborghini and Ferrari, even – make that especially – Translogic host Bradley Hasemeyer.

Scroll down to watch the excitement.

RM Auctions serves up a Ferrari FXX Evoluzione

Posted on Apr 26, 2012

The Ferrari FXX Evoluzione was unveiled back in 2006 and was limited to only 30 units. The chance of actually owning one was, well, slim if not non-existent, but for those with a very large wallet, the upcoming RM Auction in Monaco (May 12, 2012) will be the perfect opportunity to finally pick one up. That is, of course, if you have an extra $1.7 to $2.2 million to spend.

As a reminder, the FXX Evoluzione is powered by a 6.3 liter V12 engine that develops a total of 860 HP. The engine is mated to a six-speed, paddle-shift F1-style transmission and sprints the supercar from 0 to 60 mph in just 2.8 seconds.

Compared to a standard FXX, the Evoluzione kit adds a new rear diffuser and rear flaps, which increases aerodynamic efficiency by 25%. The car put on auction will be painted in a very cool jet black color combined with the Italian “Tricolore” on the front and rear of the car.

In just a few words, the Ferrari FXX Evoluzione is a must have for any Ferrari collector.

Alonso the new favourite

Posted on Apr 26, 2012

Fernando Alonso is the new favourite for the title © Getty Images

Fernando Alonso is the new favourite to win the Formula One drivers? title, said David Coulthard in his column for The Telegraph.

?He is the man with the momentum and, on the same basis that I backed Mark Webber to win the title before Korea, is now my favourite to claim the world title in Abu Dhabi on Nov 14. ?When the cars are so evenly-matched you have to back the man in possession. Especially when that man is a two-time world champion and arguably the finest driver of his generation.?

The Mirror?s Byron Young drew comparisons between Alonso and seven-time world champion Michael Schumacher as the Spaniard bids to become the sport?s youngest ever triple world champion.

?Like Schumacher, Alonso accepts no opposition within his team. Ultimately he fell out with McLaren over their refusal in 2007 to bring Lewis Hamilton to heel. ?He returned to Renault on condition he was No.1, only to be at the centre of the Singapore cheat scandal – engineered to hand him victory. ?The Spaniard has always denied involvement but at the German GP in July he was brazen enough to radio Ferrari to rein in team-mate Felipe Massa so he could start the winning streak that has taken him to the brink of history.?

69 Camaro Pro Touring WIP: Updated 4/19

Posted on Apr 25, 2012

I picked up all the parts to this at the NNL West show as this has been in my mind for a while.  Luckily the revell/ gears contest gave me a great reason to bring my plan to life.  It is a 69 camaro with a modern corvette chassis and running gear, sort of a cross between a pro touring car and a full on race car.  It will have a full rollcage and scratchbuilt interior pan, however some of the kit pan will be used.  Im trying to meet the 50% parts requirement and make it over the top so we will see what happens.

[View:http://cs.scaleautomag.com/SCACS/themes/sca/utility/Photobucket:550:0]

Body will be painted smoke pearl with one thick and one thin pearl green stripe going down the driver's site line, similar to the box art viper of revell's new kit.

[View:http://cs.scaleautomag.com/SCACS/themes/sca/utility/Photobucket:550:0]

Here is the corvette chassis after only a small amount of trimming.  Surprizingly the wheel base of both kits is the same.

The beginings of the new interior pan.

[View:http://cs.scaleautomag.com/SCACS/themes/sca/utility/Photobucket:550:0]

And how would it be complete without a corvette LS motor!

Thanks for looking and any suggestions are more than welcome.Big Smile

The two Kimi Raikkonens

Posted on Apr 23, 2012

There are, it turns out, two Kimi Raikkonens.

The public face of the 2007 world champion, who has returned to Formula 1 this season after two years in rallying, is of a monosyllabic, monotone, unsmiling figure, energised only the moment he steps into a racing car.

The one who emerges in private is very different – a talkative, jocular man, who can happily sit and shoot the breeze like anyone else.

As Lotus trackside operations director, Alan Permane has worked closely with Raikkonen since he joined the team last November.

Kimi Raikkonen

Kimi Raikkonen has been perceived as cold and uncommunicative. Photo: Getty

The 32-year-old Finn, Permane says, “is happy to sit and talk, not only about technical stuff, but laughing and joking and talking rubbish with his engineers about all sorts of stuff”.

He is just not interested in any of his dealings with the media and, unlike his rivals, doesn’t bother to hide it.

Permane worked with Michael Schumacher and Fernando Alonso through the title-winning years with the team formerly known as both Benetton and Renault. He has been impressed with Raikkonen from the start.

Raikkonen first drove one of the team’s cars at the Ricardo Tormo circuit in Valencia in late January. Straightaway the team knew they had something special.

He had not driven an F1 car since the 2009 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, and had no experience of the Pirelli tyres he was using. Yet, after a single installation lap to check the car’s systems were working, his first flying lap was within a few 10ths of a second of the fastest lap he would do over the next two days.

The good impressions did not go away.

Permane said, “He has never driven a car with a full load of fuel in it.

“We went from 30-160kg [of fuel load in Valencia] to show him that’s the sort of difference you can expect – certainly from qualifying to race it’s even bigger than that.

“We calculate the lap time difference the fuel load will make and his first lap was absolutely spot on that difference. That is impressive.”

After that, Raikkonen did another 20 laps, each one exactly 0.1secs slower than the last – the lap time lost by tyre degradation.

There is a widespread belief that Raikkonen is as unforthcoming in his technical debriefs as he is in public, but that, too, appears to be a fallacy.

Lotus have found his comments in debriefs to be not only lengthy but very perceptive, too.

He was slightly quicker than new team-mate Romain Grosjean throughout pre-season testing, so it was a surprise that he was about 0.2secs slower than the Franco-Swiss semi-novice in the practice sessions in Melbourne.

Equally, the errors Raikkonen made on his qualifying laps that left him down in 18th on the grid betrayed a certain ring-rustiness, as well as perhaps the pressure he was feeling from Grosjean’s pace.

In the race, though, something of the old Raikkonen returned as he fought back up from his low starting position to take seventh place by the end.

Clearly, though, there is more to come.

Raikkonen is not entirely happy with the feel he is getting from the Lotus’s steering, but Permane plays down the significance of the problem.

“He’s very particular,” Permane says. “He knows what he wants and it’s not quite to his liking. It’s not a million miles away, but we’ll get it there.”

Raikkonen can drive perfectly well with the steering as it is, but the problem probably does mean that he is driving a little below his maximum.

The question now is, at what level is his maximum?

The reason Raikkonen left F1 in the first place was because he performed for Ferrari for much of 2008 and 2009 way below the level expected of him.

Ferrari, in fact, terminated Raikkonen’s contract a year early and paid him not to drive in 2010 so they could bring in Alonso.

The Spaniard has since out-performed Felipe Massa, the man who generally had the better of Raikkonen from the start of 2008 until fracturing his skull in an accident in Hungary in July 2009.

Does this mean Alonso is that much better than Raikkonen? Or that Raikkonen in 2008-9 was a long way below his best? Or that Massa is not the driver he was?

No one knows for sure, but for Raikkonen’s comeback to be considered an unqualified success he will have to be able to match his new team-mate’s pace.

The fact Lotus have regrouped over the winter and produced one of the year’s fastest cars only increases the pressure – it’s not so bad to be beaten by a team-mate when you’re battling to get into the top 10; but a very different matter when you’re fighting for the podium.

That, it appears, is what Lotus are in a position to do.

“We screwed up with the car last year,” Permane says, “and we know we’ve done a lovely car this year, not only aerodynamically, but we’ve done a nice package mechanically.”

So pleased are Lotus with the new E20 that Permane says he “dared to compare it with 2005″, when Alonso won the first of his two titles.

That is not so much a measure of Lotus’s realistic hopes as a reflection of how much the drivers like the car, and how well it responds to changes.

Nevertheless, the team are confident they can keep up with the break-neck development pace of the likes of McLaren and Red Bull and hold on to their position.

For Raikkonen, the requirement now is prove that he can go with them. So far, the signs are positive.

We will help you realize the adventurous potential your next trip can provide you. White water rafting makes for an exciting adventure trip, whether you’re an experienced rafter or a beginner. Both the United States and Canada are full of great locations to practice this enjoyable and stimulating sport. Grand Canyon rafting can be part of your expedition to this popular area where there are so many things to see and do. The Rocky Mountains also offer some of the best spots for rafting in the world, such as the Colorado River and the Arkansas River. If you can swing it, pay a white water rafting company to set up your trip so that you will have everything you need once you arrive. From the experienced, to the newbie, white water rafting companies will provide you with an excellent experience.

When it comes to adventure travel, careful planning is even more important than with a more conventional trip or vacation. In order to be prepared for any and all situations on your extreme vacation; consider the weather conditions and the terrain you will be enduring. When requesting a visa for the first time; you may have considerable time involved; make sure you have given yourself plenty of time for it to go through.

In some cases, you may need vaccinations or health related preparations. If your travel package does not include a guide; you should take care of those arrangements before your trip. This may be a good idea when your destination will cause you to know a different language or get around in a strange place. It would be a good idea to design your trip plans well before your departure.

Traveling through South America and stopping in at places like Rio or Buenos Aires, try the white water rafting as it is world renowned. Getting close to the Amazon rain forest, especially near Ecuador, is a great place to begin any rafting trip. If you do like to sightsee, and take pictures, you should bring a camera along to photograph some of the best looking wildlife on the planet. You could also raft by Mount Aconcagua, near Argentina, one of the highest mountains on the planet. Machu Picchu, an ancient Inca ruin, is in this area as well and is something you should definitely visit. Worldwide, few places offer as much adventure and excitement as South America, especially on a rafting trip.

Everyone’s idea of the best type of adventure travel is a little different. It depends on what part of the world you want to visit, and what activities you find exciting. There are escapades waiting for you out on the water, in the mountains and even in the desert. Some of these special treks will require distinctive paraphernalia; while others simply call for a good pair of walking shoes. It is uplifting when you are able to escape from your daily schedule and visit some exotic place for a vacation.

Phoenix sure it will remain at front

The team that took Martin Tomczyk to a shock DTM title with an old-spec Audi in 2011 is confident it can remain a frontrunner this year despite the champion’s defection to BMW. Team Phoenix is fielding two cars for Mike Rockenfeller and Miguel Molina this year, and because of the switch to new technical regulations for 2012 it is running Audis to the same specification as the lead Abt Sportsline outfit for the first time.
